Gameplay Overview

You’re the final line of defense to power the collector of souls. Fill your collector and see how long you can last against endless hordes of enemies.

Game Jam Design Choices:

We took our definition of Overdrive from two separate sources:

- a state of great or excessive activity

- drive or work to exhaustion

We wanted a high activity game so we went with an action platform wave-defense game. As the game goes on, more and more enemies will spawn per wave, and push the player to their limits. Players will be able to make it through the first few waves with ease, but will find themselves needing to go into OVERDRIVE mode more and more as the game goes on.

Modifiers Used

Two Colors - The use of two colors led to a tricky experience with visual design. We went through and carefully chose what visual information was communicated to the user, and cut anything that wasn’t necessary for gameplay.

Resource Limit - The resource limit in this game is simple: Souls. Monsters will drop souls on death, and the player can either pick them up to put into the collector to grow stronger, or they can use them to shield themselves from incoming damage. Some monsters will eat souls, and some will drop more than others. Souls are also consumed during OVERDRIVE mode at a varying rate.

Pretty good! The core gameplay is awesome. But, to make this game really shine, there are a couple fixes:

1. Integration of the guide above into the actual game. I didn't read all that before downloading and nobody should have to.

2. Jumping from the lowest platform onto another platform was impossible for me. I'm sure y'all could, but as a player who hasn't touched this game yet, I wasn't able to climb up. This made it super difficult to survive later levels where enemies were shooting lasers into my face.

But, like I said, great game. Might be the best in the jam.
